Online Sports Betting

Online Sports Betting Demystified

Online sports betting is an exciting, mysterious and thrilling world. It is not only fun, but it can also earn you an extra coin or two. For a novice, it can be daunting and for an expert tricky at times. There are three main areas of online sports betting that once understood, whether novice or veteran, your betting experience will be simpler and more enjoyable.

1. Understand the bet and odds system.

There are three major types of bets you are bound to encounter on any online gambling franchise. Once you thoroughly understand these bets and their accompanying odds, then you are in a better position to make an informed decision and ultimately get better value for your money.

a) A moneyline bet
This bet is the simplest type of bet. It is a straight up bet where you simply choose a winning team and bet on it. The odds attached will determine your payout.

Example: Atlanta Falcons +220
Green Bay Packers -200

The (-) sign denotes the favorites while the (+) denotes the underdogs. In the above hypothetical example for the two NFL teams, If you wager that the Green Bay Packers will win, then you need to risk $200 for a chance to win $100. If however you bet on Atlanta Falcons and they win, then for every $100 staked, you get a payout of $220.

b) Point spread bet
A point spread bet is the most common as it puts both teams on an even playing field. In this type of bet, a bookmaker assigns a spread or line against which wagering occurs. The bettor will bet on the team that he/she believes will cover the betting line.

Example: Atlanta Falcons -4
Caroline Panthers +4

In the above example, the bookmaker has assigned a line of 4. If you pick the Atlanta Falcons, they have to win by 5 points to cover the spread. If you pick Caroline Panthers, they have to win or lose by 3 points or less to cover the spread. If the Falcons win by exactly 4 points that is known as a push and no payout occurs.

c) Over/Under bet
In this bet, you simply bet on whether the combined score of both teams will be over or under the predetermined score. For example, in a baseball game if the predetermined score is 11 then you need a combined total points of 12 to win for an over bet.

2. Reputability of an online gambling site

Reputability is a key thing to consider in online sports gambling. There are numerous sports betting sites, and unless you pick a legitimate one, then you might end up losing money. Two key points should be factored in when choosing an online sports betting site.

– How long they have been in business. If an online sports betting site has been around for a while, then it follows that they are trusted and legitimate.
– Social media presence. Any reputable sports betting site will have a Facebook and Twitter presence through which they connect with their customers.

3. Legality

Is online sports betting legal? This is a frequently asked question. The answer is YES. There is no federal law that bans individual online gambling. The only act that exists- the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act-simply outlaws the use of electronic funds to finance gambling. The act says nothing about an individual placing a bet.

The above three points will never steer you wrong in your quest to maximize your internet sports betting experience. Once understood then your path towards gambling domination is clear.
